PULUZ LED Portable Photo Studio

Today I’ll be writing about the PULUZ LED Portable Photo Studio. This small photo light box is on the budget end of product photography. You get two rows of LED lights and 6 different coloured fabric backdrops too. Product photography is important, it’s the first thing any potential customer sees. I do 90% of the photographs myself for this website, I’ve seen these light boxes on just about every marketplace, and all of them are affordable, but I was always intrigued to know what they’re like to use.

My initial guesses tell me that they’re cheap, flimsy, pieces of sheets that produce an OK image, and that’s about it. So, it would be nice to try one out and see for myself.

PULUZ are one of the many branded companies for this exact model of pop-up light boxes. PULUZ have other photography items and accessories for sale too.

This model also features a top camera opening too, so you’re able to shoot images from the top and from the front also.

So, is this portable studio any good? Time to test it out!

Packaging and Contents.

The PULUZ LED Portable Photo Studio comes packaged in a plastic wrapper. Inside the wrapper you’ll see a fabric carry bag to store your LED studio and coloured backdrops. The bag measures 27.5cm x 36.0cm.

Inside the carry bag you’ll find the following: 1x Light Studio, 6x Coloured Backdrops, 1x Twin Micro USB Cable, 1x English User Guide.

PULUZ LED Portable Photo Studio.

The PULUZ LED Portable Photo Studio comes flat, you need to pop it up into position by popping in some tabs to hold together the plastic walls and top. The finished piece measures 20.0cm x 20.0cm x 20.0cm.

Once constructed, it’s quite flimsy and lightweight. They’re two hooks on the back area that allows you to hook on a backdrop. You get 6 backdrops, black, blue, green, red, yellow, and white. They feel quite thin, so thin that you fear that you’ll rip them with any sort of force. They fit OK onto the plastic hooks and do in fact stay in position though.

LED’s.

You get two LED strips of 20.0cm, each strip features 20 SMD (surface mounted diode), 3.5W 6000K LEDs. You get two Micro USB ports and the cable supplied (which measures 120.0cm) allows you to power both strips at the same time. You’ll need to supply a constant 5V DC power source, such as a USB wall adaptor, a powerbank or even the spare USB outlet on your laptop.

You can’t control the light output, the only thing you can do is unplug one row if you’re finding the light too much for your photos. I recorded the output of both rows as 4.6V/0.0A/4.2W. A little different to the advertised 3.5W and within a few minutes the heat being produced from the LED’s was notable, also there’s no proper heat dissipation in place, the strips are stuck on via a sticky foam strip, an aluminium strip would be advantageous to assist with heat rejection in the long-term use.

Using the PULUZ LED Portable Photo Studio.

You can only use this LED studio to photograph small item, items upto a size of a mug, although the advert make you believe you can fill the entire backdrop with a product, technically you can, but the light won’t be able to surround the product being photographed. This model is for small items, like jewellery etc.

I decided to test it with photographing my NOTCH bracelet, it’s small, features different colours and textures, and finishes.

I’ll do a slideshow of the unedited images below with different backdrops and shooting positions.

You can see the light is very bright, especially when using the darker coloured backdrops, the last image is without any backdrop and using the plastic material of the body itself. As you can see, you’ll need to do some photo editing with the PULUZ LED Portable Photo Studio.

Conclusion.

The PULUZ LED Portable Photo Studio is an alright piece of kit. It’s certainly better than having no light box, but practical it is not, it’s an OK investment if you’re just starting out and don’t want to invest too heavily into equipment. You’ll be reliant on photo editing to soften the light produced from the twin LED rows of light.

It’s also OK for a quick image shot, especially for me as my usual set-up takes time to put together and drag out of my store cupboard.

The backdrops are OK, overall, the whole set-up is very cheap and cheerful.
