Today is an exciting day for this website, I get to share with you a review for Twysted Roots. A fantastic small business ran by Clair, a Scottish wire artist living in Cornwall. Twysted Roots is a multi-award-winning business specialising in copper wire and bead trees. Each creation is unique and handmade with high accuracy and care.

As is customary with my small business reviews I’ll be introducing the person behind the brand before leading onto the actual product itself.

Like myself Clair is also autistic and coupled with an anxiety disorder moved away from the Scottish Borders (where she’d lived her whole life) to a new area of Cornwall. This change triggered the feeling of losing familiarity experienced by autistic people. Change and routine is incredibly important to autistic persons. A completely new way of life can be very unsettling.

Starting Out.

Clair needed something to focus on. Clair had a keen interest for art and started to paint. But the inner critic stopped her from pursuing this as a career. Scouring through Pinterest Clair saw some wire art and thought she’d give it a go. After a few attempts initially making some flowers and jewellery, she stumbled upon some wire tree images and with some leftover wire decided to give it a go. It was the perfect choice as Clair loves trees. Clair made a few trees for friends and family it was suggested that Clair should sell some of these creations. Twysted Roots was born!

Twysted Roots was launched in April 2017 and since has won multiple awards, including the coveted #SBS (Small Business Sunday) award by Theo Paphitis.

Clair can create a customised tree for you and is very accommodating for such requests. Clair uses tarnish resistant copper wire. Then with many coloured wires and multi-coloured glass beads including crystal versions, the possibilities are endless.

My Tree.

I’m a massive fan of Clair’s work. So, when we decided to collaborate for this review, I was undecided on a design. I set Clair a challenge of making me a tree without me knowing what it looked like. The first time I saw my tree is when I opened the box after delivery. Talking of the box, I’d initially missed the unique artwork painted on the outer box in my haste to open the box to see my tree.

The painting was good enough to make me believe it was a print, it was an extra touch I hadn’t anticipated and something Clair tries to do for everyone (time allowing).

Clair had thought about it and designed a two-toned coloured tree compromising of my logo colours of grey and orange.

It’s exceedingly difficult to capture the unbelievably detailed work. This really is the perfect example of that phrase ‘better in real life’.

The tree I have is 8.5cm in height and roughly 8.5cm at the widest point. Multiple strands of grey and gold toned copper wire makes the structure, whilst the combination of orange and grey beads compliment the design.

I love the bottom root section. This intricate design allows the tree to free stand without toppling over. Twysted Roots have other mounted versions which include the roots integrated onto a slate and other stoned material.

Caring for the Tree.

You’re able to carefully adjust the tree to suit your preferred positioning. I wouldn’t suggest you continuously adjust or bend the wire as you might snap it off completely. On the Twysted Roots website it mentions about sharp edges and to be cautious. This is because Clair can’t 100% guarantee each section won’t have some sharp edges due to the nature of the materials used. I couldn’t find any sharp edge whatsoever. I also tested to see if the base of the tree would leave behind marks, which it didn’t.

Conclusion.

I love my Twysted Roots tree. I was amazed just how detailed it is, every part of the tree is a work of art and highly detailed. It was a surprised to see my logo colours used in a creative way too. Usually I must become nit-picky to find some fault with most products. But I can’t even do that on this occasion. This tree is literally perfect. I’m so happy with it and will cherish it forever. A 10/10 score isn’t enough.
