Witty Battery Saver

Today I’m writing a review for the Witty Battery Saver. Witty approached me a few weeks ago and asked if I’d like to review for them, they’re an Italian start up, with a recent successful KickStarter campaign. Now, they’re looking to break into other geographical areas, such as the UK.

Witty is fighting a battle to help reduce the current environmental waste caused by lithium-ion batteries, to date Witty have saved/offset 180 million litres of water and over 300k tons of CO2 with decreasing smartphone waste and a tree planting program in areas globally that desperately need help.

The Witty Battery Saver helps prevent your smartphone battery from prematurely affected by the overcharge situation that affects battery lifespan. The solution, the Witty Battery Saver automatically turns off the power source to your smartphone when charged. It won’t turn back on as the continuous battery top up that occurs when you leave a power source connected is detrimental to your battery lifespan.

So, is the Witty Battery Saver any good? Time to test it out!

Witty Battery Saver.

The Witty Battery Saver measures 47.1mm x 32.3mm x 22.5cm and weighs 15.7G. I was sent a green battery saver, but you can also get one in black or orange. I was also sent two USB-C adaptors, this enables you to either charge from your usual USB-A power source via the Witty Battery Charger or connect the battery saver to the port of your smartphone via the USB-C adapter, both works, I tried both options. You simply press the button to activate the power source. The Witty Battery Saver has been designed and is produced in Italy.

The Witty Battery Saver is compatible on all smartphones, so whether you’re running on iOS or Android, it’ll work and help preserve the battery life for your device.

It’s not just smartphones that you can use the Witty Battery Saver on. You can use it on all small rechargeable devices such as headphones, tablets, smartwatches, and more and up to 65W too. The Witty Battery Saver unfortunately doesn’t work on laptops or PC’s, but in the future Witty may well develop something.

But Wait…?

Here goes, you’re probably screaming at me right now that all modern smartphones have a protected battery charge function. And… you’d be right, well, sort of, but here’s why.

Modern smartphones do in fact have cut-out when your device has been fully charged. But when the battery levels drain whilst still plugged in your phone will draw more power in order to top back up and maintain a 100% level. This continuous discharge and mini top up cycle affect the overall life of your battery. Some older devices don’t turn off the power source and continuously keep power at 100%.

The Witty Battery Saver allows you to charge your device to 100% and then power cuts off and no battery top ups will occur until you press the button and reactivate power to your device. Then it’ll charge again once to 100% and cut out.

With no mini battery top ups, the Witty Battery Saver prevent premature wear of the electrodes in the Lithium-Ion battery cells.

Nerd fact. NASA charges the batteries of its satellites up to 60% this preserves the overall battery life.

Conclusion.

The Witty Battery Saver is a great little device that helps prevent battery damage from overcharging. I used it for several weeks, and it works fine, and although it’s too early to say for sure whether my battery has been prolonged, I feel assured that I’m not overcharging my device in any case. The option to either plug the battery saver into your usual wall power source or directly into the port of your smartphone really helps. I found the port of my smartphone best for night-time charging as I have a cable running from behind my bedside table and reaching down to the wall socket each time to press the Witty button would be too much.
