We’ve all been there: wanting a video doorbell but being put off by the £150+ price tag, complicated wiring, or the constant need to recharge batteries.
Enter DoorVi, an innovative UK brand behind what it describes as a smarter, simpler, and more private way for visitors to connect with you.
This review marks a significant departure for My Helpful Hints.
While I’ve reviewed plenty of traditional smart home gear, DoorVi is something entirely different.
It isn’t a camera that watches the street 24/7; it’s a smart, private response system designed for ultimate simplicity.
What is DoorVi?
At its core, DoorVi is a contactless video intercom.
Instead of a bulky plastic unit with a lens and a button, the “hardware” is a high-quality, laser-cut acrylic plaque.
The concept is beautifully simple:
- The QR Code: Visitors scan the unique code with their smartphone camera.
- The Connection: It instantly initiates a secure, anonymous video call directly to your smartphone.
The visitor doesn’t need to download an app, and you can answer from anywhere in the world.
I’ve been testing the Acrylic 7×11 model, which retails for £29.99.

Top Tip: While my specific unit is the QR-only model, DoorVi also offers an NFC-powered version.
This allows visitors to simply “tap” their phone against the sign (just like a contactless payment) to start the call.
Design and Installation: Truly “Peel and Stick”.
Installation is about as easy as it gets.
The QR code is embedded in the premium acrylic plaque (as seen in my photo) which comes equipped with a single, high-strength self-adhesive strip on the back.

There is no drilling, no wiring, and no Wi-Fi setup for the plaque itself.
You simply peel off the backing and stick it to your door, gate, or office entrance.
Because it is made of scratch-proof, UV-treated acrylic, it’s built to withstand the British weather without fading.
I’m using the Black version, but it’s also available in Red, Blue, and White.
The App Experience: Simple, Secure, and a Bit Cumbersome
Since the plaque is “passive,” the app is the brain of the system.
It is available on both the Google Play Store and the Apple App Store, making it perfect for households with a mix of iOS and Android devices.
- Privacy King: This is the big one. You don’t have to hand out your personal mobile number to strangers. DoorVi uses encrypted technology to bridge the call, meaning your identity remains concealed.
- Two-Way Video Control: When a call comes through, you can always see the caller’s face. However, to fully utilise the system, most people will require the Gold plan. This tier unlocks two-way video interaction allowing you to choose whether to show your face or remain audio-only.
- Smart Redirection: If you’re busy, you can redirect the call to a family member, a colleague, or a housemate.
- The “Cumbersome” Log Management: One major point of friction is deleting call logs. Currently, to clear your history, you have to remove the registered QR code from the account and re-add it. Even more frustrating, your subscription plan doesn’t automatically re-upload after doing this, which is a significant oversight in user experience.
Subscription Plans: Choosing Your Tier.
While the basic service gets you started, the Gold plan is the “sweet spot” for most users because it enables that essential two-way video communication.

The Office “Life Hack”: Room Management
Beyond the front door, DoorVi makes for a brilliant conference room booking system.
Instead of expensive tablets, you can use a DoorVi plaque as an instant reception.
Visitors scan the plaque to “call” the person in charge of a meeting room or connect to maintenance, all with zero infrastructure or cabling required.
Conclusion: A Niche Hero.
Is DoorVi a Ring killer?
No.
But it isn’t trying to be.
It’s an innovative, UK-born solution for people who need a maintenance-free intercom without the hardware headache.
For renters, business owners, or those with remote gates, DoorVi is a clever and affordable way to stay connected.
Pros and Cons.
Pros
- Privacy First: Connect with visitors without sharing your personal phone number.
- Visual Vetting: See the caller first and choose whether to show your own face (Gold plan and above).
- Maintenance Zero: No batteries, wires, or Wi-Fi setup needed.
- Damage-Free: Single adhesive strip is perfect for renters and PVC doors.
Cons
- App Friction: Deleting call logs is a cumbersome process that requires re-registering hardware and losing subscription sync.
- Paywall: Two-way video (the core experience for most) requires the Gold subscription.
- Not for Surveillance: It won’t record motion or catch a “porch pirate”.
