XTAR L8 Pro

Have you got a drawer full of old rechargeable AA and AAA batteries that no longer seem to hold a decent charge?

Today, I am putting the XTAR L8 Pro smart battery charger to the test to see if it can simplify everyday battery management.

The L8 Pro is an 8-bay smart charger designed to offer complete flexibility across slots.

It handles standard 1.2V Ni-MH/Ni-CD rechargeable batteries as well as modern 1.5V Li-ion AA/AAA cells, allowing you to mix sizes, capacities, and chemistries without restriction.

I have been testing the XTAR L8 Pro to evaluate its charging speeds, real-world convenience, and features, including its dedicated DisCHG and Refresh modes designed to restore capacity in aging Ni-MH batteries.

Let’s get into the full review and see if the XTAR L8 Pro is the ideal charging station for your desk or workshop!

Packaging and Contents.

The XTAR L8 Pro arrives in compact retail packaging that highlights key features and battery compatibility right on the box.

Having standard USB-C power out of the box makes it easy to run from a phone adapter, laptop, or portable power bank.

Design and Build Quality.

The XTAR L8 Pro features a low-profile rectangular body measuring 135 x 103 x 28 mm and weighing 145g.

It uses an open-slot design that allows for easy insertion and removal of AA and AAA batteries while giving superior airflow to keep battery temperatures low during heavy charge sessions.

On top, an HD digital LCD screen displays real-time charging status, battery type detection, voltage status, and operating modes across all eight channels at a glance.

Features and Operation.

The XTAR L8 Pro operates automatically upon inserting cells, using auto-detection to distinguish between 1.2V Ni-MH and 1.5V Li-ion chemistries.

Key feature highlights include:

  • Independent Slot Control: Charge 1 to 8 batteries simultaneously in any combination without needing paired slots.
  • Mixed Chemistries & Sizes: Mix AA and AAA sizes alongside 1.2V Ni-MH and 1.5V Li-ion cells freely in the same session.
  • DisCHG & Refresh Modes: Dedicated conditioning cycles for Ni-MH batteries to eliminate memory effect, clear capacity fade, and restore old cells back to peak performance.
  • 0V Low-Voltage Activation: Intelligently detects over-discharged batteries and applies micro-current pulses to revive them.
  • Simple Control: Single-button control allows easy toggling between standard charging, discharge mode, and deep refresh cycles.
  • Comprehensive Safety Protections: Guards against over-current, over-voltage, overheat, short circuit, and reverse polarity, displaying an “Err” warning if non-rechargeable or faulty batteries are detected.

Charging Performance.

Powered by a 5V/3A Type-C input, the L8 Pro applies tailored charging algorithms depending on the battery chemistry detected.

For 1.5V Li-ion cells, it uses a 3-stage TC/CC/CV method to maximise safety and battery life.

A magnified view of the blue LCD display shows eight independent battery status indicators with labels for Working Mode (DisCHG/CHG/Refresh), Battery Level Indicator, Battery Type (Ni-MH or Li-ion 1.5V), Fully Charged (“Done”), and Error Reminder (“Err”). For 1.2V Ni-MH cells, XTAR’s CVSA cut-off technology provides precise full-charge detection while reducing excess heat build-up.

Note on Compatibility: Due to minor differences in positive terminal height structures, XTAR notes that the L8 Pro is not recommended for charging XTAR 1.5V AAA 1200mWh Li-ion cells, though all other 1.2V and 1.5V AA/AAA rechargeable cells are fully supported.

Pros and Cons.

Pros

  • Flexible Slot Usage: 8 independent channels allow simultaneous charging of mixed AA/AAA and Ni-MH/1.5V Li-ion batteries.
  • Informative LCD Screen: Shows real-time charging status and mode progress across each bay.
  • Refresh & Discharge Modes: Specialized modes help condition and restore capacity in older Ni-MH cells.
  • USB-C Powered: Connects easily to power banks, laptops, or standard USB wall adapters.
  • Open Thermal Structure: Open-slot design enhances airflow around batteries during operation.

Cons

  • AA/AAA Specific: Limited strictly to AA and AAA cell form factors (does not support 18650/21700 cells).
  • Refresh Functions Limited to Ni-MH: DisCHG and Refresh features apply exclusively to Ni-MH batteries; Li-ion cells automatically charge to full.
  • AAA 1200mWh Li-ion Exception: Not recommended for XTAR’s specific 1200mWh AAA Li-ion variant due to positive terminal design.
