Looking for earbuds that excel in music, gaming, and calls? The SoundPEATS Air5 Earbuds aim to be the all-rounders you’ve been searching for.
A key selling point of the SoundPEATS Air5 Earbuds is their focus on high-fidelity audio.
They boast both Hi-Res Audio and Snapdragon Sound™ certifications, indicating a commitment to delivering a premium listening experience.
The earbuds utilise the Qualcomm S3 audio platform, which provides powerful audio processing with reduced distortion and a 5dB improvement in the signal-to-noise ratio.
This translates to a noticeable improvement in sound clarity and realism, as well as enhanced call quality.
Whether you’re listening to music, gaming, or taking calls, the Air5 aim to provide exceptional performance with minimal latency.
To achieve its audio goals, the SoundPEATS Air5 Earbuds employ a 13mm dynamic driver.
The diaphragm of this driver is constructed from a combination of Japanese imported paper pulp, biofibre, and composite PU, a material choice intended to produce a clean and natural sound signature with detailed audio reproduction and high resolution.
In addition to driver design, SoundPEATS has also focused on reducing internal interference.
The earbuds’ battery incorporates a ring-shaped nickel plate, which is claimed to reduce background noise by approximately 28.57% by minimising interference with the speaker.
So, without delay, let’s get to the review!
Packaging and Contents.
The SoundPEATS Air5 Earbuds come packaged in a card box with a sleeve, featuring product images and specifications.
The box measures 10.5cm x 10.5cm x 3.5cm and weighs 147G.
Inside the box you’ll find the following:
- Earbuds (inside charging case)
- Charging Case
- USB-C/USB-A Charging Cable
- Multi-Lingual User Guide
The supplied USB-C to USB-A cable measures approximately 25cm. While this is quite short, you can use any USB-C cable.
SoundPEATS Air5 Earbuds.
The SoundPEATS Air5 Earbuds measure approximately 35.4mm x 16.3mm x 17.6mm and weigh just 4.5G each.
The SoundPEATS Air5 Earbuds are available in multiple colour options, I’ll link them below:
The charging case measures approximately 51.1mm x 55.8mm x 25.8mm and weighs (with earbuds) 44G.
The charging case opens with the larger section lifting upwards, a design that feels slightly awkward at first but becomes more familiar with use.
On the bottom of the charging case you get a single USB-C port and a power button.
You also get an LED light on the charging case too. Below is what each light means.
- Under 20%: Red flashing light
- 20-69%: Amber flashing light
- 70-99%: Green flashing light
- Fully Charged: Solid green light
Before using your SoundPEATS Air5 Earbuds you need to give them a full charge in the charging case.
Hook up the charging case to any 5V DC power source.
Charging takes around an hour and you’ll then get approximately 6 hours of audio before your earbuds need to recharged in the charging case.
The charging case will charge your earbuds 5 times before needing a recharge themselves.
App.
SoundPEATS offers app support for their earbuds, a feature familiar to users of previous models.
However, they have recently replaced their original app with a new version called PeatsAudio.
To utilise the app with the Air5, you’ll need to download PeatsAudio from your device’s app store, create a new account, and pair the earbuds.
While the previous app was functional but basic and contained several bugs, the new PeatsAudio app presents a significantly improved user experience with a cleaner design and more intuitive layout.
Within the PeatsAudio app, users can control the Active Noise Cancellation (ANC) feature and access a new setting called Ear Canal.
This feature offers three adaptive noise cancellation modes designed to optimize performance based on individual ear canal sizes.
Ear Canal 2 is the default setting for most users.
If you experience issues like wind noise or a whistling sound, SoundPEATS recommends adjusting the Ear Canal mode within the app or slightly rotating the earbud stem for a more secure fit.
Avoid pushing the earbuds too far into the ear canal, as this can block the vent holes and cause a whistling sound.
Another convenient feature of the PeatsAudio app is the ability to perform lifetime firmware updates directly within the app.
This ensures that your SoundPEATS Air5 Earbuds can receive performance enhancements, bug fixes, and new features as they become available.
Beyond firmware updates, the PeatsAudio app provides a customisable equaliser, allowing users to fine-tune the audio to their preferences and save their preferred settings.
This is a significant improvement over the previous SoundPEATS app, which was known for its instability and inability to reliably save equaliser presets.
Touch Controls.
You get multiple touch sensitive controls on each earbud, you can control the following:
- Volume Down: Single tap left earbud
- Volume Up: Single tap right earbud
- Skip Track: Tap and hold right earbud
- Previous Track: Tap and hold left earbud
- Answer/End Call: Double tap either earbud (double tap again to end)
- Reject Call: Tap and hold either earbud during an incoming call
- Game Mode: Triple tap left earbud
- Activate Assistant: Triple tap right earbud
Using the touch controls on the SoundPEATS Air5 is a smooth and intuitive experience. Skipping tracks, in particular, is handled very well.
When you perform the gesture, the audio dips slightly, and a clear confirmation tone plays, so you know exactly when your command has been registered.
This makes for a very positive user experience.
Using the Earbuds and Sound Quality.
One of my main concerns with the SoundPEATS Air5 was comfort, as I experienced significant discomfort with the previous Air4 Lite model.
The Air4’s caused fatigue and pain in the tragus area, so I was eager to see if SoundPEATS had addressed these issues with the new design.
Given my previous discomfort with the Air4 Lite, I was pleasantly surprised to discover that SoundPEATS had clearly addressed the fit issues with the Air5.
They now sit comfortably in my inner ear, a welcome improvement.
With comfort addressed, let’s now turn the attention to sound quality.
In terms of audio performance, the SoundPEATS Air5 offer a clear and crisp sound signature, free from any discernible distortion.
The inclusion of a customisable equaliser within the app provides users with the ability to tailor the sound to their individual tastes, allowing for adjustments to emphasise bass or vocals as desired.
The noise cancellation and passive noise isolation are both highly effective, creating an immersive and enjoyable listening experience.
Experience your music like never before with support for high-resolution audio streams up to 24-bit/96 kHz.
This delivers exceptionally rich and clear sound, revealing the subtle details and depth of your favourite tracks.
The aptX Lossless codec, with its high bit rate of up to 1.2 Mbps, takes the listening experience to the next level, providing superior audio quality compared to many other Bluetooth codecs.
Additional Features.
A crucial consideration for gaming and video consumption is latency, and the SoundPEATS Air5 perform admirably in this regard.
The synchronisation between video and audio is almost seamless, with minimal perceptible delay.
Achieving this level of synchronisation is a significant technical challenge, and SoundPEATS has clearly prioritised low latency in the design of these earbuds.
The Bluetooth 5.4 connection is exceptionally strong, maintaining a stable signal well beyond the advertised 10-metre range, even across multiple floors of a building.
When it comes to phone calls, the SoundPEATS Air5 perform well. The built-in omni-directional microphones ensure clear voice pickup, and in my experience, I had no trouble being heard clearly by callers.
There was no noticeable degradation in sound quality during calls.
