The main idea behind SunSafe by Oliphant is to discreetly hide your valuables in what looks like a sun lotion bottle whilst you’re on the beach. The idea is to fool unscrupulous individuals away from your most precious items. SunSafe is designed to store, keys, payment cards, cash, and other valuables away from prying eyes.
SunSafe is packaged in a part cardboard and part plastic blister pack. The retail packaging measures 31.5cm high x 12.5cm wide and a depth of 5.5cm and weighs 125g.
The reverse is printed with product descriptions, sizing, multi-language instructions and company information.
You get your SunSafe sun lotion beach safe but also you get 2x replacement rubber O-rings. Which is a good job as when I first opened the lid on my SunSafe the original rubber O-ring had already perished and fell into many pieces.
Oliphant SunSafe Beach Safe.
Upon first looking at SunSafe, the first thing I notice is…
It’s MASSIVE! and I mean massive. I have never seen a sun lotion bottle quite as large as this is portraying to be. It has printed decal stickers that not only look low quality but also aren’t even stuck on straight!
The lid design lets down the whole look altogether. There is no notch like you would find on a genuine bottle to open easily with a thumb.
Also, when you put on a rubber O-ring it’s very difficult to close the lid and bottle together. When you open it again the rubber O-ring moves out of position and becomes distorted and you must carefully reset the rubber O-ring every time you use it, which becomes annoying after a while.
I know the idea of this product at first glance is to fool someone into thinking it’s a harmless bottle of sun lotion, but I can’t help when I look at SunSafe all I can think is how unrealistic it is. The bottle measures 21.5cm high x 8.5cm wide and a depth of around 4.5cm. The idea is to conceal larger mobile phones including the iPhone 7 Plus, but the iPhone 7 Plus measures 15.8cm in length so the bottle is still far too big.
The bottle sticker says it has 200ml of sun lotion on the front and on the reverse, but the bottle is larger than a 400ml bottle of shampoo, maybe if it had a banner sticker on the top on the front saying something like “100% Extra Free – Bumper Family Pack” it would make sense for someone to have a very large bottle of sun lotion on the beach. Also “Made in China” on the back, should really read “Produced or Manufactured in China” if we’re talking about sun lotion.
Although I see where Oliphant are coming from, SunSafe needs a re-think, or even a re-purpose. It would be far better to re-brand it maybe a shampoo bottle and use it as a safe for the Swimming Pool. The lid design needs to look more realistic and some definition on the bottle would also help, maybe hand grips on the sides. The rubber O-ring needs a re-design so that it fits into a deeper recessed groove rather than just being placed on a small lip, this would mean easier opening and closing and provide a far better weather proof seal.
Ultimately to mock a sun lotion bottle, the product needs to be smaller and look more like an everyday sun lotion product.
