Blue Coffee Box

Blue Coffee Box is a subscription service that puts you in control. You get a choice of a single coffee bag per month or a box containing three different bags per month.

Not only can you choose your own subscription level, but you can also choose how you’d like your coffee. You get a choice between getting your coffee as whole roasted beans, or you can get your coffee already ground for you. If you choose to have your coffee sent to you ground, you can even specify if it’s to be used for a cafetière, dripper, aeropress, or espresso.

And that’s not all. Blue Coffee Box also lets you choose your own roasting method, you get a choice of light, medium, or dark. Or you can select to allow Blue Coffee Box surprise you with any method as selected by their very own coffee expert.

But is the Blue Coffee Box subscription good value for money? Is the coffee any good? Time to test it out!

Packaging.

The Blue Coffee Box comes packaged very neatly in a Blue. The box measures 34.5cm x 19.5cm x 3.5cm.

Upon opening the Blue Coffee Box you’ll come across 3x different bags of coffee, 3x coffee information cards, and 1x thank you card from the Blue Coffee Box team.

Blue Coffee Box.

Inside every Blue Coffee Box, you get three different bags of coffee, these change on a month-by-month basis as some coffees are in a limited supply and will change throughout the year. In the box that I’ve been given I had coffee from Mezcla De Mujeres, El Roble, and Mantiquerira Amarelo.

More information about the coffee can be found on each of the bags, including the process, growing altitude and region. You also get a roasted-on date, this is to ensure your coffee stay’s fresh. For best flavour you should use your coffee within 4 weeks, but each bag is good for around 3 months.

You also get a lot of information on each of the coffee cards, so not only can you enjoy a wholesome cup of coffee, but you can also read where and how your cuppa was produced.

To open a bag, you simply need to tear off from the top, and when finished each bag has a zip-lock closure to keep your coffee fresh. I fully tested and made coffee from each of the bags supplied by Blue Coffee Box. Please bear in mind I’m a coffee lover and drinker, but not quite a coffee connoisseur. Maybe after this review I’ll have a little more knowledge of the process!

I’m also a milk and two sugars type of drinker, but for these reviews I’ll be having my coffee without sugar and tasting them black.

Mezcla De Mujeres.

This coffee comes from Honduras and is grown in the Corquin, Copan region at an altitude of 1200-1450M and has notes of cherry, blackcurrant, and green apple. This coffee is roasted by Coffee Central. Upon making this variety of coffee I noticed it had quite a rich and full-on coffee taste. But I couldn’t detect the fruity notes, but the flavour wasn’t bitter at all when drank with milk.

The Mezcla De Mujeres coffee also has what I’d call a medium scent, it’s not overpowering but still you’re able to smell the aromas, it’s also medium in colour, and when I drank this black, I found it to be quite bitter in flavour, so for me milk needed to be added to enhance the flavour. Overall, this coffee blend was OK, not my favourite, but in no means did I dislike it!

El Roble.

This coffee comes from El Salvador and is grown in the Apanaca Llamatepec region at an altitude of 1450-1650M and has notes of apple and dried fruit. This coffee is roasted by Horsham Coffee Roasters. Upon making this variety of coffee I noticed it had a subtle but pleasant taste. I was only able to detect the fruity notes when I drank it black.

The El Roble coffee also has what I’d call a subtle scent, it’s not overpowering but still you’re able to smell the aromas, it’s also very light in colour (almost like tea), and I preferred drinking this coffee black and with no sugar. Overall, this coffee blend was my favourite out of all three, I can’t get enough of this coffee!

Mantiqueira Amarelo.

This coffee comes from Brazil and is grown in the Sul/Sudoeste De Minas, Minas Gerais region at an altitude of 1000-1250M and has notes of chocolate and plum. This coffee is roasted by Horsham Coffee Roasters. Upon making this variety of coffee I noticed it had a very strong scent and flavour. But I couldn’t detect the notes and the flavour was very bitter when drank without milk.

The Mantiqueira Amarelo coffee also has what I’d call a strong coffee scent, it’s quite overpowering, it’s medium in colour, and I preferred drinking this coffee with milk and with no sugar. Overall, this coffee blend was OK it’s what I’d call middle of the road, it’s very much a standard cup of coffee, nothing too special.

Is this subscription value for money?

This is probably the most important factor when looking into subscription services, is it value for money? Well if you go with the standard month-by-month subscription then you’ll be paying £16.99 for three bags of coffee each month. But if you prepay the worked out monthly costs can decrease the more you prepay. But if I price it on the more expensive month-by-month basis each bag equates to around £5.66 each 155G bag of coffee beans.

If you compare this to say a standard Costa coffee 200G bag which currently is priced at around £3.70 the Blue Coffee Box does in fact cost more. But apart from cost you do get a unique offering that simply cannot be achieved in your local supermarket. Also, it’s worth noting that UK delivery is free.

Conclusion.

I very much like the idea behind the Blue Coffee Box. I’m a big coffee drinker anyway and this review has been very inciteful as to know a little about each cup of coffee that I’m now currently drinking. Also, I preferred drinking these coffees without any added sugar and in one instance without milk! Who’d of thought it!

Yes of course you can buy cheaper coffee, but who cares, when you can a unique coffee every month. I’m thinking this subscription is a more of a perfect gift for someone.

Overall, I’ll have to say I do highly recommend this coffee subscription from Blue Coffee Box.
