Today I’ll be writing about the Kokoon Sleep Headphones. These headphones have been designed to help you get a great night’s sleep. They’re a hefty £315.00, so should be the best of the best in terms of sleep aids.

Kokoon also advertise that these headphones can be used for other uses aside from just sleeping, these include general relaxation and travelling.

Active Noise Cancellation (ANC) ensures all unwanted background noises are drowned out or reduced.

I’ve seen other reviews for these headphones on other well-known newspapers and publications, but few give a proper in-depth review, they’re simply selling you these headphones (fake news?). So, fair play to Kokoon, they wanted me to give an honest review, and that’s exactly what I’ll be doing.

So, are they any good? Time for an honest review!

Packaging and Contents.

The Kokoon Sleep Headphones comes packaged in a green retail cardboard box which features product images and specifications printed on it. The box measures 21.5cm x 17.5cm x 9.0cm and weighs 880G.

Kokoon Sleep Headphones.

The Kokoon Sleep Headphones come in either black or light grey in colour. I chose black, for no reason, just because. They measure (from ear cup, over the band and to the other ear cup) 55.0cm and extend to 62.0cm and weigh 290G. The outer material on the earcup itself has a slight felt feeling to it, this makes for static build-up which attracts dust, along with Tammy’s fur too. So frustrating to clean, and when you think you’re done, bam! more appears and sticks.

The ear cups swivel and rotate enough to your head movements, which is great. But the extending headband is also a pain too, most headphones my head sits comfortably within the non-extended headband function, but not with the Kokoon Sleep Headphones. They need to be extended in order to fit over my ears, this extension section then catches on my pillow and pulls the headphones off from my head. The headband is padded and is comfortable, and acts as suspension too.

The power on button is located on the right-hand side of the band and just above there’s a 3.5mm AUX input port too, so you’re able to use these headphones without using the Bluetooth connection.

Charging and Connecting.

The Kokoon Sleep Headphones feature a built-in 500mAh Lithium-ion battery which will require a charge prior to use. Simply plug in the supplied Micro USB or other Micro USB/Android charger plug) and use a 5V DC power source. The headphones take 2-3 hours to charge and is indicated with a green LED light to indicate a full charge. The battery lasts around 13 hours on a single charge, so will need recharging before each night use. This is a little disappointing, I’ve reviewed headphones that feature a 20+ hour battery usage time. For £315.00 you’d expect a longer lasting battery and with a USB-C charging port too.

The other button next to the Micro USB port is the pairing button.

To pair the headphones with your iOS or Android device you’ll need to do the following. Power on the headphone by pressing the power button, the LED will briefly show white, hold the pairing button next for 3 seconds to enter mode. The LED will flash blue, go to the Bluetooth menu on your device and pair to ‘Kokoon Relax’. That’s it, they’ll automatically pair every time you power them on to your device.

Kokoon App.

In order to get the most out of the Kokoon Sleep Headphones you’ll need to download the Kokoon app, it’s free to both iOS and Android users. This app enables you to see your sleep patterns, select background noises, music and much more.

You’ll need to set up an account and from there you’ll be all set for your first night’s use.

The inside of each ear cup features what resembles a torture device with probes, but they’re built-in biofeedback electroencephalogram (EEG) brainwave sensors. It’s these sensors that monitor your sleeping behaviours.

Using the Headphones.

The Kokoon Sleep Headphones are designed for people who sleep on their back, but if you’re like me, a night-time wriggler you’ll be uncomfortable with using them. For the first 2 nights I got on surprisingly well using them, but after 2 weeks of use this review couldn’t come quick enough.

I’ve had broken sleep, neck ache, replaced my pillow, caught the headphones on my pillow more times than I can remember, managed to power them off whilst sleeping, unable to sync data properly, got fed up with the dust attraction, charged them every day, and now dread using them, in fact I hate seeing them, they’re sat near me as type this, looking at me, ready to torture me again tonight.

The app is glitchy, apparently, I was in a deep asleep whilst walking about, enjoyed my best REM sleep whilst urinating (in the toilet ?), and was awake when I wasn’t. Basically, it doesn’t work. Also, when you power on the headphones it tries to transfer collecting data onto the app, but whilst doing this you’re able to hear the transmission frequency. It’s like putting your ear onto a Cathode Ray Tube TV with the frequency sound. Hardly relaxing.

Music Use.

I’m autistic so the idea of a product that can reduce unwanted background noise is like my utopia. But, when I’m able to hear unwanted frequencies, and the white noise generated from the headphones together at the same time is shocking.

Kokoon say you can use these as a general pair of audio headphones too, it’s true, but only if you hate music. Seriously, the back feed from the Bluetooth, Active Noise Cancelling, and Active White Noise airwaves, coupled with poor sounding audio is not exactly relaxing.

The idea is there with the Kokoon Sleep Headphones. It’s certainly a good concept, but, falls short of a daily useable product. Kokoon have a new product out early next year, it’s an in-ear version. I think that’ll make a huge difference, so long as the connection and app is upgraded though.

Conclusion.

The Kokoon Sleep Headphones aren’t for me. I had nothing but issues whilst using them. They’re uncomfortable, have poor and inaccurate connectivity issue, and sound dreadful.

I do hope the new in-ear model improves on all these issues, as I was left disappointed with the whole experience, using something that’s designed to be relaxation device.

I cannot personally recommend them, such a shame!
